Mass Spectrometry

The Core Facility Hohenheim (CFH) provides mass spectrometry services and expertise for proteomics, metabolomics and small organic molecules analyses to research groups of the University of Hohenheim and external clients. Mass spectrometry analyses may cover a broad range of analytes and applications from biological, agricultural, environmental, clinical, food and biotechnological research areas. We apply start state-of-the art GC-MS/MS, MALDI-TOF, UHPLC-MSD as well as Orbitrap- and QTRAP-LC-ESI-MS/MS instruments for the analysis of proteins, peptides and small molecule targets (see “Instrumentation” for a complete list of available mass spectrometers). The CFH mass spectrometry research services cover, among others, the following areas:

  • Identification and targeted quantification of proteins and post-translational protein modifications
  • Quantitative analyses of complex proteomes (proteomics)
  • Metabolite-profiling and metabolomics
  • Targeted quantification of metabolites (amino acids, lipids, vitamins, flavor compounds, etc.)
  • Pesticide screening in food and other matrices

If methods are not yet available, customized mass spectrometry methods may be established on demand.
In addition, the CFH provides competent consultation for your research projects including support on sample preparation, data interpretation, statistical and bioinformatic analyses of mass spectrometry data as well as support for preparation of figures for publications. Visualization and interpretation of highly complex proteomics and metabolomics data sets can be supported by the CFH Bioinformatics Unit. Please contact the CFH staff to determine the workflow and methods that will best suit your specific research project.
